Trauma Treatment Q & A

What is trauma?

Trauma refers to any experience that causes significant physical or psychological harm. A traumatic event may cause bodily injury, emotional distress, or both.

Examples of traumatic experience include:

  • Death of a loved one
  • Domestic abuse
  • Sexual assault
  • Combat experience
  • Automobile accidents
  • Natural disasters
  • Witnessing violence or a severe accident

Most people who experience trauma endure negative thoughts and feelings, such as grief, anger, or fear, for some time after the event occurs. Some people experience additional symptoms, known as an acute stress reaction. These symptoms include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Irritability
  • Recurring dreams or flashbacks
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Breathing difficulties

Most of the time, these symptoms resolve within a few weeks as you mentally process the experience. When the symptoms of acute stress reaction don’t go away, it can lead to a condition known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

PTSD can interfere with your ability to perform daily tasks and may impact your health and personal relationships.

How does trauma therapy work?

Evidence-based trauma therapy refers to a group of techniques that have been shown in clinical studies to lessen symptoms associated with trauma.

The experts at EXIS Recovery have extensive training and experience with a variety of cutting-edge, evidence-based practices, such as:

  • Individual psychotherapy
  • Small-group counseling
  • Sensory-motor therapy
  • Trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (TF-CBT)
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Dialectical-behavioral therapy (DBT)

The goal of each of these therapeutic techniques is to help you integrate the traumatic experience, so remembering the event no longer causes an intense emotional response.
