Trauma Treatment

With trauma therapy EXIS aims to assist individuals in overcoming various traumatic events. Trauma can be any such event that one perceives as a threat to his or her life, physical safety, or emotional well-being, from which he or she is unable to cope.

Several disorders are associated with having experienced a traumatic event and can create a significant challenge in normal day-to-day functioning. Some of these conditions which may occur as a result are Post Traumatic Stress Disorder,  Acute Stress Reaction, and Dissociative Identity Disorder.

Fortunately, various modalities are available when seeking therapeutic help for such disorders. Trauma treatment such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) are two examples we use at EXIS that have been proven highly effective. Ultimately, treatment success is determined by the individual's ability to reprocess the activating event. When utilized correctly, the emotional impact attached to the activating event may become disconnected from memory.

Following treatment, recollection of the traumatic experience results in a neutral or minimal emotional response. Essentially, the treatment goal is such that the individual arrives at a point where the traumatic event no longer defines nor threatens his or her self-concept.
